Lake Atitlán Guatemala

Lake Atitlán is a lake in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range. It is in the Sololá Department of northern Guatemala. "Atitlan" means "at the water" in Nahuatl. The main tourist attraction is the Indian's Nose at the top of the mountain above the towns of San Juan and San Marcos. It is accessible through various trails, and there are also organized trips with horses to the top. Situated in the country's most western highlands, the country's most beautiful spot is the pure and blue Lake Atitlán. A large collapsed volcanic cone can be found right at Lake Atitlán. The descendants of the ancient Maya still live off the land, which is rich in ash and other minerals. The maize farming methods have remained the same over the years because the local people have made an effort to preserve their traditional ways of living.
